Working Class Heroines

I’m going to attempt to write about a working class heroine every week.

Working class women are often the last people we think about when we think of political activists, even within left wing movements. But a great many of them played a pivotal role in shaping the society and ideologies we have today, and it’s about time we knew as much about the Celia Sanchezes of this world as we do about the Che Guevaras, as much about the Annie Kenneys as the Sylvia Pankhursts.

1. Clara Lemlich, strike leader and life-long activist
2. Dora Thewlis, mill worker and “Baby Suffragette”
3. Jayaben Desai, leader of the Grunwick strike.
